Kayak Adventure
This weekend I went kayaking with my mom, my brother, my cousin, his two friends, and of course our two Jack Russells, Theo and Leo. When we arrived at Quitsa Pond to kayak, I noticed that it was extremely low tide and had to go in the water to look around. As soon as I went in I noticed an abundance of scallops, unlike last year. I caught a large sea urchin, a huge purple shore crab, and saw a ton of mud crabs right at the boat loading area.

When we started our kayaking trip, I got a small head start and stopped at a small beach on the side to look for fiddler crabs but didn’t find any, so I kept going. We were going to a small beach that we had visited many times before to eat lunch. After walking around for less than 5 minutes I found a horseshoe crab. My adventure had just started though. I started walking farther up the beach and found another horseshoe crab. I kept walking for 10 minutes up the beach and found a huge male lady crab, then another, and I found around eight more. In total, I believe I found 4 horseshoe crabs and 10 lady crabs.

As I was walking through the water, I noticed something odd. I couldn't believe my eyes. I saw 2 intact moon snail nests. I had never seen one in real life before. They had already been used, so there were no baby moon snails. To see my post from 2013 about moon snail nests click here.
I kept walking up the beach and noticed a large flounder but it darted away as soon as it noticed me. As I was walking, I saw something in the water. It wasn't an animal, and it looked to be made out of metal. I picked it up, and it was a metal boat propeller! After seeing all of theses interesting things I didn't want to leave, but I had realized that I had been walking up the beach for more than an hour. I had so much fun and recommend it to anyone looking for good adventure.

Grey,
It is really fun to follow your explorations and adventures. Thanks for sharing. You were very observant on your kayak trip, and you were able to make some interesting discoveries. I loved reading about how excited you were especially to find the moon snail nest, and I like the way you refer back to your previous blog posts. Your job with the Woods Hole Institute sounds interesting and important, too. Do you think you will find a lot of microplastics? Maybe you can write an article for the newspaper encouraging people to be more careful with the beautiful environment of Martha's Vineyard. You were also very lucky to be able to hear first hand about the other research going on at the institute. The technology they have developed for exploring the ocean environment is interesting to read about too, and I will check out the links you have included to videos etc. I hope the little painted turtle makes out ok, and I agree that having wetlands right on your property is awesome. You are, as always, making great use of your summer and you are learning a lot and teaching us a lot, too!
